Some people say an extended warranty has saved them thousands when a major component failed, while others claim they never used it or found that many repairs weren't actually covered. It seems like the answer depends on the car, the warranty terms, and a bit of luck.

When weighing the pros and cons, these are the things I usually consider:

• What's actually included in the warranty

• The cost of the coverage versus potential repair bills

• The reliability record of the make and model

• Any exclusions, deductibles, or claim limits

• Whether I plan to keep the car for several years
