[MATERIALS] 

  • Oil Paint: Any brand.

Titanium White (Must have)

Cadmium Yellow

Cadmium Red

Alizarin Crimson

Ultramarine Blue

Pthalo Green (or Viridian)

Burnt Umber (or Raw Umber)  

  • Canvas paper pad or Stretched canvas (9"x12"-14"x18", smoother surface is better for best surface quality).
  • (OPTIONAL) Brushes: Various size of flat, sable or round (either natural or synthetic hair of any brand is fine but must have good shape of hair). Zin mostly use low price/synthetic flat brushes.
  • Palette Knife: Sharp.
  • Palette: Palette Pad or any wooden/plastic/glass palette.
  • (OPTIONAL) Medium: Pure, Odorless 'Linseed oil' or 'safflower oil' (similar smell and texture with normal home cooking oil) in a jar. No fast-dry medium, such as; Liquin or Galkid. Odorless mineral spirit is optional (At workshop, Zin will use Safflower oil + Ordorless mineral spirit). 
  • Paper towel or rag: To wipe oil from brush. (Zin use cutted drop cloth)
  • Plastic bag: To put oiled paper in.
  • (OPTIONAL) Large paper or plastic sheet: To prevent paint drops on table or floor.
  • Easel (optional): Portable. Wooden French easel or Light aluminum frame, Stand or table-top easel. No easel? No problem. Just put canvas on table.
  • Reference Picture: You can bring photo references you like to work from. They can be poretait, figure, still-life, landscape or cityscape. Bring them as the printed photos or digital images in tablet or cell phone.

*For our healthy study experience, please don't use fast drying medium, smelly or toxic mediums, such as liquin, galkid, etc. But use odorless/no smelly medium only. 

 

 

[About 'Palette Knife Painting in Oil' Workshop]

 

*For any experienced-level of artists who have been drawing or painting in any medium.

*Workshop runs in English.

*Zin teach alone and Space is limited to 12 artist-students. 

 

This workshop's consist of instructor's lecture/presentation/demo, student's multiple exercises and group/individual critiques.  Instructor, Zin Lim will introduce his approaches in 'Palette Knife Painting in Oil' by a main demo. During his demo you will learn how he use palette knife in order to create intersting marks, how to plan for beautiful composition as well as how to choose color. You can ask any questions about material, technique, composition and aesthetics to understand everything about the unique direction and art creation general. Zin will answer for all of student’s questions. 

The lectures and demos will cover the next themes and techniques.

  1. Understanding materials and medium.
  2. Understanding visual elements.
  3. Mindset to be an expressionist.
  4. How to avoid just rendering but move onto expressing.
  5. How to create interesting strokes, textures and pattern.
  6. How to design solid and interesting art.
  7. Basic Composition for successful oil painting.
  8. Color scheme. (painting workshop only)

You will exercise and experiment on creating multiple poaintings form reference photos provided or your own. 

Zin will provide timely feedbacks, mini demos and answer for questions. 

For last one hour of workshop, Zin critique on students’ works. Mostly group critique. 

Sometimes 1 on 1 depending on the progress of workshop activity.

 

Beginning artists will be able to learn-

  1. Various application techniques in charcoal drawing and/or oil painting,
  2. Basic proportion for drawing/painting in your choice of subjects,
  3. Step by step work order for efficient construction of oil painting,
  4. How to continue fun study and improve skills after workshop.

Advanced/Intermediate artists will be able to-

  1. Broaden your perspective in oil painitng art,
  2. Style-shift from realism to expressionism or impressionism,
  3. Know keys for unique stylization of artwork.
  4. Know how to 'good' start and finish an artwork.
