[COURSE DETAIL]
It is 3 Saturday course. Each week has it's own themes. Zin Lim will share his unique charcoal drawing techniques, composition methods and ideas in the online lectures and demonstration.
- For any experienced-level of artists who have been drawing human head in graphite or charcoal medium.
- The workshop runs in English.
- 15 Limited Zoom spots
- You will create a portrait along with instructor and international students.
- Instructor will provide; Lecture / Demo / Feedback
- Week 1: You will learn about charcoal drawing material and various ways of application. Then, you will watch Zin’s demo and draw heads’ gestures in various angles and lightings along with Zin’s step by step progress.
- Week 2: Instructor will provide lectures and demos about main principles of drawing; value, shape, edge. You will draw along and complete heads in full detail.
- Week 3: Instructor will provide lectures and demos about composition of drawing; staging, contrast, depth, and mood. You will draw along and complete a head in full detail. Instructor will give timely feedbacks and critique on your work.
In this workshop beginning artists will be able to learn-.
- How to use charcoal drawing material.
- Various application techniques.
- Efficient step-by-step work order of drawing a portrait.
- How to continue to enjoy head drawing and improve skills after workshop.
Advanced/Intermediate artists in other media will be able to-
- Broaden your perspective in a loose approach.
- Style-shift from tight to loose and painterly.
- Know keys for the unique stylization of artwork.
- Know how to manage the work process from 'good' start to completion of an artwork.

[CHARCOAL DRAWING MATERIAL]
You will need below to draw in class and assignments after class.
- Drawing pad: One from below.
- Strathmore Drawing Pad, 300 series, medium surface. 14"x17" or similar or larger.
- (Recycled) Strathmore drawing pad, 400 series, medium surface. 14”x17" or similar or larger.
- Strathmore drawing pad, 400 series, medium surface. 14”x17" or similar or larger.
- Charcoal drawing pads. 12"x16" or similar or larger (any brand).
* No 'New Sprint', 'Bristol' or anything has 'smooth' surface, They don't work well with charcoal.
- Willow or/and Vine (soft or extra-soft) charcoal sticks (any brand)
- HB charcoal pencil: 'General' brand (if you don't have 'General' brand, vine charcoal medium or hard or Nitram hard is fine.
- Kneaded eraser.
- Blending Stumps or paper rolled/sharpend as a pencil's shape.
Optional materials
- Utility Knife.
- Drawing Board : any of wooden, plastic or thick paper board for backing drawing pad.
- (Workable) Fixative : for in case you save your work for long.
- Pencil Extender: for in case your pencil is too short.
- Sandpaper Block or any smooth Sandpaper.

Week 2: Instructor will provide lectures and demos about main principles of drawing; value, shape, edge. You will draw along and complete heads in full detail.
Week 3: Instructor will provide lectures and demos about composition of drawing; staging, contrast, depth, and mood. You will draw along and complete a head in full detail. Instructor will give timely feedbacks and critique of your work. The lectures will be recorded and available to students for streaming for two month.
